There’s no doubt that the San Diego Zoo animals are a huge part of this park’s appeal. From the unique Panda Research Station where you can learn about Giant Pandas and meet rare baby pandas, to the Children’s Zoo where you can get hands on with baby chickens and a hedgehog, to Polar Bear Plunge and Elephant Odyssey, this zoo has it all.
Visit the Hunte Amphitheater, which will dazzle you with music and some of the most beautiful birds you will ever see during the Take Flight: An Avian Adventure show. You’ll see the world’s most talented chickens playing drums, owls and raptors soaring the skies, and a tribute to the conservation of the bald eagle.

Visit Elephant Odyssey and meet Ranchi, who weight about 12,000 pounds. He is the largest of the group of elephants. Cookie who weighs about 8200 pounds and is 53 years old likes to collect rocks. Cha-Cha is a young elephant at only 41 years old and likes having her tongue scratched and wearing hats made of hay. Tembo is the African elephant – the only one – in the group and purrs when she receives treats during training. These elephants and more are part of the group you will meet when visiting these amazing San Diego Zoo animals.
With over 800 species of animals from all over the world making the 100-acre Zoo their home, finding your way around the entire park to see each and every animal can be difficult. Start your trip with the 35-minute Guided Tour Bus. The bus ride will give you a peek at all areas of the Zoo, so you can pick and choose where you would like to come back and visit in more depth.

Beside the animals, you’ll also find an incredible botanical collection, with more than 700,000 exotic plants on site.
While any time is a great time to check out the Zoo, there are some special activities throughout the year you may want to take advantage of. If your vacation to San Diego occurs in October, kids admission is free to both the Zoo and the Wild Animal Park. If you visit during the summer months of June to September, on the other hand, you will get the chance to enjoy the Nighttime Zoo.
These are just a few of the San Diego Zoo animals and exhibits available but there are many more ready for you to explore.
